allen and roth closet system

Every allen and roth closet system at Lowe’s is Hartford: wood towers, shelves, drawers and poles that hang on the wall. The reach-in kits fit a 5 to 8 ft closet, and towers, drawer units and shelf kits sold separately take it further.

Plan one for your wall width, learn what each part is and how big it is, and avoid the two problems owners report most: boxes that do not match and cam locks that do not line up.

Which allen and roth closet kit fits your wall

There is no allen + roth closet design tool; the Hartford pages on lowes.com link to ClosetMaid’s online designer. For a straight back wall, this check is quicker: enter the width and see which Hartford kit or parts cover it, and how much comes off the shelves.

Measure the back wall of the closet from side wall to side wall. 5 ft is 60 in, 8 ft is 96 in, 12 ft is 144 in.

Width ranges are the ones Lowe's lists for each Hartford product. Trim amounts assume one kit spanning its full 96 in, cut down evenly. The planner works with the back wall only; corners and return walls need their own pieces.

allen and roth closet tower, shelves and drawers

A reach-in kit holds a tower, three tower shelves, a drawer, two long shelves and three poles. Everything hangs from the wall; none of it stands on its own.

The tower, shelves and drawer. The tower is drawn at the 24-in width of the stand-alone Hartford tower unit; the drawer at the 21.5 x 10.6 in of the add-on drawer unit.

allen and roth ventilated closet kit or solid shelves

“Ventilated” here does not mean wire. Lowe’s lists no allen + roth wire closet systems: the ventilated Hartford kit has slatted wood shelves, and the solid kit has flat panels.

allen + roth Hartford white solid-shelf closet kit with tower, drawer, long shelves and hanging poles

Solid shelving

Flat shelves in what Lowe’s calls hand-selected wood veneers. The White Solid kit adds straight and curved valances, and one tower shelf takes a metal brace that tilts it down for shoes.

White: item 5130290, model LWSCSBW. Also sold in Java.

allen + roth Hartford Java ventilated closet kit with slatted wood shelves

Ventilated shelving

Slatted shelves, sold as 100% solid wood. Two of the three tower shelves adjust, and the drawer is soft-close on full-extension slides. One owner who built three solid towers and one ventilated tower found the ventilated one weaker.

Installing an allen and roth closet system

The manual puts it at about 120 minutes for two people. The tower hangs on two wall cleats lag-bolted into studs, and the long shelves sit on L-brackets with wall anchors. It is not designed to stand freely.

stud 31-1/2 in min. 39-1/2 or 40.6 in apart wall cleat on M8 x 2-1/2 in lag bolts
Cleat spacing differs between manuals (39-1/2 in in the solid kit manual, 40.6 in in the ventilated kit manual), so set it from the one in your box.

Tools the manual lists

Phillips screwdriver, drill with 3/16 and 3/8 in bits, 1/2 in socket wrench, level, stud finder, tape measure, step ladder and hammer.

If something will not fit

Tower will not hang
The cleats are not at the manual’s spacing, or the bottom holes are lower than 31-1/2 in.
Long shelf floats at one end
The closet is wider than 8 ft. Buy matching brackets or a longer shelf.
Long shelf is too long
The closet is narrower than 8 ft. Shorten one end, but not with a hacksaw; the manual suggests an insured remodeler.
A screw came through the side panel
An M4 x 38 mm screw went where an M4 x 14 mm belongs.
Drawer runner will not go in
The runner is on backwards.

One owner’s video shows the system hanging on the wall above the baseboard, with the hardware hidden.

allen and roth closet system reviews

3.6out of 5 from 1,200 Lowe’s reviews of the Hartford reach-in kits; 66% would recommend

41% five stars, 22% four, 12% three, 9% two and 17% one star. The bar runs from five stars on the left to one on the right.

The split is wide. Owners who like it praise the solid wood, the look and how sturdy it is once up; one blogger reports no sagging shelves and smooth drawers seven years after joining two kits into a walk-in. Next to ClosetMaid, she found it costs more and installs a little harder. The complaints are about what comes in the box: white parts in different shades, cam locks that do not line up, missing cam sleeves, cracked parts, weak drawer slides and thin instructions.

Before and during the build

  1. Buy every box at once, and compare the finish before you build. Two owners got white parts in different shades, one even after an exchange. Check each box under the same light.
  2. Count the parts against the manual’s list. Every piece has a part number (about 50 in the ventilated kit), so you can order a missing one on 1-866-439-9800 or at [email protected]. Count the cam sleeves too; one owner’s were missing.
  3. Sort the hardware into labeled cups. One owner counted more than 26 hardware types and lost the letter labels as soon as the bag was open.
  4. Seat each cam lock before you move on. Several owners report cams that did not line up. Do not force a panel; check that the right part and screw are in place.
  5. Fix the cleats into studs. A stud finder is on the tools list, and the blogger with the seven-year closet says to use one for the brace.

allen and roth closet system questions

Is there an allen and roth closet design tool?

Not one with the allen + roth name. The Hartford product pages on lowes.com link to the ClosetMaid online design tool. The planner above covers Hartford kits for a single wall.

What sizes do allen and roth closet kits come in?

The reach-in tower kits are listed for 60 to 96 in walls and measure 96 x 76 x 16 in assembled. An open shelf tower kit covers 96 to 144 in, and 24-in towers are sold on their own.

Is the ventilated closet kit made of wire?

No. Every Hartford kit is wood; ventilated means slatted wood shelves. Lowe’s lists no allen + roth wire closet systems.

How much weight can the shelves and rods hold?

30 lb per shelf and 40 lb per pole, per the manual, with poles no longer than 60 in.

Can I cut the shelves and rods to fit?

Yes. Lowe’s says the shelves and rods can be cut to fit. The manual says not to cut the long shelf with a hacksaw and suggests an insured remodeler.

Can I add towers or drawers later?

Yes. 24-in towers, drawer units, shelves, baskets and rods are sold separately. Owners have had trouble matching whites between batches, though, so it is safer to buy what you need at once.

What warranty does a Hartford closet have?

A one-year limited warranty for the original buyer, per the ventilated kit manual. The kit manuals exclude the shelves, and chips, scratches and dents are not covered. Assembling it wrongly or overloading it voids the warranty.

How do I clean it?

Never with water. Wipe it with a damp cloth and a mild cleaner, dry it, and keep the closet out of direct sun and in a climate-controlled room.
